First Floor Plan

Tyrone Bunyon Jr. won a intercollege competition for rethinking how a simple ranch home could be reimagined as a contemporary residence prototype. Inspired by the vernacular 'foxtrot' homes found through Middle Tennessee, this humble abode was designed to bring the outdoors and nature into the home, including outdoor spaces that are view from the inside and natural materials which intermingle with the light throughout the day.

Materials and elements found in nature such as bark on a tree, peach pits, the texture of leaves and blades of grass were used as inspiration to inspire how materials and surfaces were used to intermingle and manipulate light within the home.

"Light, God's eldest daughter, is a chief member in the beauty of architecture."

Inspired By Nature

The father of modern architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, said that he believed in God but he spelled God 'n-a-t-u-r-e'. His famous prairie style architecture, organic forms and manipulation and harnessing of  natural light all point back to his biggest must and inspiration which are the forms and creativity we displayed in the natural environment around us. It was my goal to use our world to inspire my architecture as well in the design of the ranch house.

Elements in Nature

Light, shade and shadow articulate and embellish the beautiful forms we see in nature. I became fastened how light through a leaf could glow orange and red, the groves in a peach pit and coral create shade, shadow and texture which change the appearance and consequentially, the mood of an element.

Elements in Architecture

My idea was take how light was manipulated in natural elements and paly them to architectural elements. How can the texture of bark in a tree, the natural rustic feel of that, come across in say, a column? For this we choose rough unfinished heavy timber columns? How can brick and masonry cast deep shadows like the ones we see were inspired by in the peach pit and coral?  These design goals were employed in designing the ranch house.

Basswood Model Displaying Structure

“The ranch house structure was designed with a simple post a beam frame. The intention was to display the simple elegance of the wood structure within the home. Unlike in traditional homes where the structure is hidden within the walls, the open floor plan allows for a light and airy residence with rustic wooden columns which add to the warmth and character of the space.
